Biometric POS terminals and ATMs: software for paying and withdrawing cash by biometrics

A biometric payment terminal is an ordinary terminal or ATM with a camera and software that decides whether a frame can be sent to the bank. NeuroVision supplies that software: face capture with prompts, a liveness check, control over who is in front of the camera, and passing the frame to the UBS matching through your bank. The terminal and the ATM do not store biometrics.

Software for a biometric terminal

0.1 sec for face matching
99,9 % Liveness accuracy
3 levels of iBeta PAD attacks are stopped by Liveness

The bank matches the face against the UBS and debits the money; NeuroVision is responsible for capturing and checking the frame.

What makes a POS terminal biometric: a camera, software and a link to the UBS

Biometrics at the checkout is growing

Bank of Russia data for Q2 2025.

  • 01

The camera is half the job

Many smart terminals and cash registers have a camera. But without software it captures anything: a blurred frame, a photo on a phone, a person standing behind. The bank will reject such a frame or, worse, accept it.

  • 02

Software decides whether a frame can be sent

The terminal software tells the customer how to stand, checks light and sharpness, rejects fakes and makes sure that the person paying is the one who chose to pay. Only then does the frame go to the bank.

  • ≈60 million biometric payments per quarter
  • ≈RUB 45 billion worth in total
  • 11 times more than a year earlier

From a PIN pad to an ATM: which devices accept biometrics

The logic is the same: a camera, a frame check, matching through the bank. What changes is the shape of the device and where the person stands. A palm scanner at the checkout is covered on the “Palm payment” page

  • PIN pad with a camera

A remote terminal at the cashier. The camera is above the screen; the customer looks into it from arm’s length.

  • Android smart terminal

A face payment terminal on the counter or in a waiter’s hands: the SDK is built into its payment app.

  • Self-checkout

A camera in the cash register housing. Biometrics for self-service terminals without a cashier: the bank decides by matching against the UBS.

  • Kiosk, vending, petrol station

An unattended machine. The camera is on the front panel: paying for fuel at the pump or for coffee from a machine.

  • Transport validator

A camera at the turnstile or inside the vehicle: paying the fare without a card in hand.

  • ATM

A camera above the screen: card-free login and cash withdrawal by face through the bank — see the block below.

The frame’s path: from the terminal camera to the bank’s answer

What happens inside the terminal while the customer looks into the camera. An example: a bakery, a purchase of 612 roubles.

Step 1

The camera is switched on by choice

The customer taps “pay by biometrics”. Before that, the camera does not process frames — someone paying by card is not included.

The customer chooses to pay by biometrics
Step 2

Software prepares the frame

On-screen prompts, light and sharpness control, Liveness, a check that the person at the centre of the frame is the one who started the payment and that other faces do not replace them.

The terminal software checks the frame
Step 3

The frame goes to the bank

Over a secured channel to the acquirer, and from there to the system of an accredited organisation that matches the face against the UBS vectors. The terminal keeps no copy.

The frame goes to the bank for matching
Step 4

The bank answers

Matched — “Paid” and a receipt. Not matched or the check failed — the screen immediately offers a card or a QR code.

The bank confirms the payment

Biometric ATM: card-free access and cash withdrawal by face

  • Face login instead of a card

The customer selects “log in by biometrics” and looks into the camera. The bank matches the face through the UBS and opens the menu of their account.

  • A second factor for cash

For withdrawals the bank adds a PIN or a security code. The threshold depends on the amount: the larger it is, the stricter.

  • Fakes at the ATM

A printout, a photo on a tablet, a mask, a video — Liveness rejects them before the frame goes to the bank.

  • A stranger behind

If two people are in the frame, the module does not send it: it captures only the person at the screen and tells the bank about the attempt.

Card-free access to an ATM by face already works at large banks: the first time the customer logs in with a card and PIN, after that — by face. An ATM has its own risks, and the camera module takes them into account.

Camera and location: requirements for a biometric terminal

A good algorithm will not save a badly placed camera. What to check before buying a batch of terminals or modules for ATMs. We select exact parameters for your model and point of sale.

  • A front camera with autofocus; the face large in the frame and facing forward Mandatory
  • IR illumination or a second depth camera — for low light and protection against screens Recommended

  • The camera at face level; for an ATM — allowing for height and wheelchair users Mandatory
  • No bright window or shop display behind the customer Recommended

  • Prompts such as “closer”, “take off your glasses”, “look at the camera” — large, in the interface language Setting
  • The customer sees when the camera is on and when it is off Mandatory

  • The frame is checked on the terminal or in the NeuroVision cloud on servers in Russia — depends on the device’s power We check in the pilot
  • Connection lost — biometric payment is unavailable, the till offers a card and a QR code Setting
  • “Mandatory” — without it the bank will reject frames
  • “Recommended” — reduces the number of retries
  • “Setting” — adjusted to your point of sale
  • “We check in the pilot” — decided on test devices. More about checking that a person is live — Liveness

Who is responsible for what: the manufacturer, the acquirer, the shop and NeuroVision

A biometric POS terminal is the work of four parties. So that the project does not stall, roles are divided before purchase. Connection is done by your integrator or NeuroVision partner.

  • Terminal manufacturer

The housing, the camera, the payment app, certification of the device for payment systems. Builds the NeuroVision SDK into its app.

    Responsible for:

    Hardware and firmware

  • Acquiring bank

The contract with the shop, receiving the frame, passing it for UBS matching through an accredited organisation, debiting the money.

    Responsible for:

    Payment and the UBS

  • Shop or point owner

The installation site, lighting, cashier training, another payment method next to it. Does not receive or store customers’ biometrics.

    Responsible for:

    Point of sale

  • NeuroVision

The SDK and camera module: prompts, frame quality, Liveness, control of other faces, an attempt log; cloud in Russia or your perimeter.

    Responsible for:

    Frame check

Terminal, ATM and the law: UBS matching, 10 days and the right to refuse

What Federal Law 572‑FZ means for a device at the checkout and in the ATM area. A summary of the rules as of 27 October 2026 — a guide for talking to a lawyer, not a legal opinion.

  • Biometrics for authentication may be processed only for matching against UBS vectors (clause 2, part 1, Art. 15 of 572‑FZ) 572‑FZ
  • That is why the terminal does not look for a face in its own database: it sends the frame to the bank, and the bank sends it for UBS matching through an accredited organisation (part 4, Art. 16 of 572‑FZ) 572‑FZBank

  • Frames for authentication are stored only for handling complaints and for no longer than 10 days, then destroyed with certified tools (clause 3, part 1 and part 2, Art. 15 of 572‑FZ) 572‑FZBank
  • NeuroVision software does not leave a frame in the memory of the terminal or ATM after sending NeuroVision

  • Protective measures and certified encryption tools for authentication through the system of an accredited organisation (parts 3 and 5, Art. 16 of 572‑FZ) 572‑FZBank
  • Cross-border transfer of biometrics during authentication is prohibited (part 21, Art. 3 of 572‑FZ): the NeuroVision cloud is on servers in Russia 572‑FZNeuroVision

  • Refusing biometrics cannot be grounds for refusing to sell goods or provide service (part 13, Art. 3 of 572‑FZ) 572‑FZ
  • Providing biometrics cannot be mandatory (part 3, Art. 11 of 152‑FZ): next to the camera there is always a card, a QR code and ordinary ATM login 152‑FZ

How much software for a biometric terminal and an ATM costs

The price depends on the device and the sales model: per terminal, per transaction or a licence for the fleet. The commission for the payment and UBS matching is taken by the bank — it is not included in NeuroVision’s price.

Frequently asked questions about biometric terminals and ATMs

A payment terminal with a camera that accepts payment by face: it captures the customer, checks the frame and passes it to the bank for UBS matching.

If it has a front camera and Android — yes: the SDK is built into the payment app. Without a camera you need a PIN pad or a module with a camera.

No. The frame goes to the bank and does not stay in the terminal. Biometrics for authentication may be stored for no longer than 10 days and only for handling complaints (Art. 15 of 572‑FZ).

No. The face is matched against the UBS by the bank and an accredited organisation; without the UBS, customers cannot be recognised automatically by face.

According to the UBS operator, about ten large banks through SBPay, and the list is growing. Which acquiring bank connects your point is decided by the contract.

Yes, at banks that have installed ATMs with a camera: the first time the customer logs in with a card and PIN, after that — by face. For cash withdrawal the bank adds a code.

They pay by card or QR code. Refusing biometrics cannot be a reason to refuse a sale (part 13, Art. 3 of 572‑FZ).

Biometric payment is unavailable, and the terminal immediately offers a card or a QR code.

There the customer confirms an action on the phone; here they pay at the till without a phone. About the app — on the page “Face login and confirmation of operations”.
