Face recognition turnstiles

A face recognition turnstile captures the person at a terminal on the pedestal, checks that a live person is in front of the camera rather than a photo or a mask, and finds the candidate in the access list. The passage is opened by a security guard who sees the frame and the photo from the list, or by the UBS — as 572‑FZ allows. A guest is matched against a document on the spot, and those without biometrics keep the card.

Face turnstile: the camera recognises, a guard or the UBS opens the passage

The face suggests, the person decides

The guard does not search the list for a pass — the system has already shown who this most likely is. All that is left is to look and open.

  • 01

The terminal does the heavy lifting

It finds the face, checks that this is a live person and picks a candidate from the access list of this entrance. The guard post screen shows the camera frame and the photo from the list side by side, with the name and the access zone.

  • 02

The decision belongs to a person or the UBS

The guard compares the frame and the photo and presses “Let through” — the passage opens, as after a card. Where the organisation is connected to the UBS, the person’s biometrics are matched in the UBS by an accredited organisation, not by your database.

  • 2 photos the frame and the photo from the list on the post screen
  • 1 button let through or call
  • 0 cards for those who gave consent

Where the face recognition terminal is installed on a turnstile

A face recognition turnstile is an ordinary turnstile plus a terminal or a camera where the person turns to face them. The installation spot determines whether the camera sees the face large and straight on.

  • Terminal on a tripod pedestal

The most common option: a terminal with a screen on a bracket by the pedestal at face level. The person walks up, looks at the screen and sees a prompt.

  • Terminal on a speed gate flap

In business centres they are mounted on the glass flaps of a speed gate. This suits cases where the look of the lobby matters and the flow goes in one direction.

  • Camera above the passage zone

A camera on a bracket in front of the turnstile captures the person approaching in advance, while they walk. It needs a straight angle to the face and light without backlight.

  • Full-height turnstile on the perimeter

Passages to a plant or construction site, often outdoors. The terminal is in a protected housing under a canopy, with face lighting.

  • Wide passage and gate

For people in wheelchairs, with cargo and for emergency evacuation. The camera is placed lower so that the face of a person in a chair is in the frame too.

  • Guard post with a monitor

The guard’s screen at the turnstile or in the booth: the frame, the photo from the list, the “Let through” and “Call” buttons. Without it the “guard confirms” mode does not work.

Passing a turnstile with guard confirmation: four steps

An example is an employee of a production site who gave written consent to passing by face. It is morning, the shift starts at eight.

Step 1

The face is added to the access list

The employee signs the consent as a separate document, the security service adds the photo to the “Workshop 2” list. Whoever did not consent gets a card.

The employee is added to the access list
Step 2

The terminal checks a live person

The person walks up to the pedestal and looks at the screen. The terminal checks that it is not a photo on a phone or a mask, and only then looks for the face in the list.

The terminal checks live presence
Step 3

The guard sees the frame and the photo from the list

The post screen shows the camera frame, the photo from the list, the full name and the access zone. The guard compares and presses “Let through” or “Detain”.

Step 4

The turnstile opens, the passage is logged

The guard’s decision goes to your access control system, the flap opens. The log holds the time, the entrance, the frame and who confirmed the passage.

The passage is opened and written to the log

Anti-spoofing at the turnstile: what Liveness rejects

  • A photo on a phone screen

The simplest attempt is to show the terminal an employee’s photo from a messenger. Liveness notices the screen, glare and the device frame, and no passage is offered.

  • A printout and a mask

A printed photo, a cut-out mask, a dummy — Liveness tells them from a live face by volume and texture. Security receives an alert with the frame.

  • A video instead of a person

A video of an employee on a tablet in front of the camera is rejected in the same way as a photo. The accuracy of the NeuroVision live presence check is 99.9 %.

  • Two people in the frame

If there are two faces in the frame, the terminal does not pick a candidate automatically but shows the guard that two people are passing. Passing one face after another is a reason to detain.

A face turnstile is tested the same way as a pass: people try to get through using someone else’s. The live presence check runs before the list search, and the guard does not have to guess whether the person on the screen is alive.
There is no absolute protection, so the decision to let someone through stays with security or the UBS, not with the camera. How the live presence check works is described on the page Liveness; a mode without tasks for a flow — passive Liveness.

Face passage modes and 572‑FZ: a guard, the UBS, a guest’s document

A face at a turnstile is biometric personal data: it is used to establish who is passing. 572‑FZ limits who may recognise a person by biometrics and how. Below are the passage modes the law directly permits and what to arrange for each. A summary of the norms as of October 2026 — a guide for a lawyer, not a legal opinion.

  • The check that a live person is in front of the camera does not identify them and is needed in every mode below NeuroVision
  • Biometrics is processed with the person’s written consent, except for the cases of part 2 of article 11 of 152‑FZ; access control is not named among them 152‑FZ

  • 572‑FZ does not apply to a match that is carried out not automatically but with the involvement of an authorised official (clause 2 of part 2 of article 1 of 572‑FZ) 572‑FZ
  • The guard sees the frame and the photo from the list and opens the passage themselves; the guard’s authority is fixed in a local act or in the contract with the security company Your company
  • The system picks a candidate and writes a log, the decision belongs to a person NeuroVision

  • Biometric authentication is carried out against UBS vectors; organisations and entrepreneurs use the information system of an accredited organisation (clause 2 of part 1 of article 15, parts 3–4 of article 16 of 572‑FZ) 572‑FZ
  • It requires the person’s consent and the accreditation of the organisation whose system is used (part 3 of article 16 of 572‑FZ) 572‑FZ
  • After authentication, biometrics is stored only for handling complaints — for no more than 10 days (clause 3 of part 1 of article 15 of 572‑FZ) 572‑FZ
  • Connection is described on the page “Identification through the UBS” NeuroVision

  • The guest’s document is recognised by the camera, the face is matched once against the photo in the document, the guard confirms access NeuroVisionYour company
  • The guest’s face template is not saved for the next visit — the match is repeated next time NeuroVision

  • A person is not obliged to provide biometrics; they cannot be refused service because of the refusal (part 3 of article 11 of 152‑FZ) 152‑FZ
  • A card, a pass without a photo or passage by document through the post — with the same zones and terms Your company

  • Organisations are prohibited from collecting and storing biometrics for identification outside the UBS (clause 1 of part 1 of article 15 of 572‑FZ). Whether your scheme falls under the prohibition depends on where the list is stored and who makes the decision — a lawyer gives the qualification before launch 572‑FZYour company

What the passage speed and the rush-hour queue depend on

The speed of a face turnstile is made up of several seconds: approach, frame, check, decision, flap. The figure for your entrance comes from a test at a real checkpoint, and the queue depends on four things.

  • Camera and light

A large, straight-on face without glare from a window behind — and the terminal does not have to wait for a good frame. Poor light causes retries, and retries cause a queue.

    Check:

light in the daytime and in the evening

  • Passage mode

With guard confirmation the speed also depends on how many passages fall to one guard. At the main entrance in rush hour a separate post is set up for 1–2 turnstiles.

    Check:

    the number of posts

  • The number of people at the peak

A shift of 300 people in 15 minutes and an office with flexible hours are different tasks. They count the peak, not the average, and install as many passages as the peak needs.

    Check:

    shift schedule

  • Retries and failures

A mask, a hood, glasses with glare, a person looking at a phone — the terminal asks to repeat. An on-screen prompt and floor markings reduce retries.

    Check:

the share of retries in the test

If the terminal did not recognise or the connection is lost

  • A poor frame

The terminal asks the person to come closer or take off the hood. After several attempts the guard checks the person by pass or document — as before face recognition.

  • No connection to the cloud

At sites with unstable connection recognition is installed in your environment, on your own server. Cards keep working through your access control system.

  • Terminal failure

A turnstile stays a turnstile: the card reader and the guard post work without the terminal. Install the terminal next to the reader, not instead of it.

  • Evacuation

Emergency unlocking of turnstiles is configured in your access control system and according to the site’s fire safety rules. Face recognition does not take part in this scenario.

A turnstile must not lock people inside or leave a queue outside because of a single poor frame. Fallback routes are worked out before launch.
For those who did not consent to biometrics, the card is not a reserve but the main way of passing: with the same zones and terms as passing by face.

Integration with the turnstile and access control software: who does what

NeuroVision is the software part: recognition, Liveness, lists and a screen for security. The turnstile, the controller and installation are yours or your integrator’s.

  • Terminal or camera

A terminal with a screen on the pedestal or an IP camera above the passage. We select requirements for the camera, mounting height and light for your site.

  • Recognition and lists

NeuroVision finds the face, checks Liveness, picks a candidate in the list of this entrance and shows the guard the frame and the photo. Lists are maintained in the dashboard or via API.

  • Controller and access control software

The “let through” decision is passed to your access control system, and it opens the flap in the same way as after a card. How the response reaches the controller or access control software is determined at connection together with your integrator.

  • An integrator

Installation, connection to the controller and commissioning are done by your integrator or by an NeuroVision partner. We provide the API, recognition setup and a test at a real checkpoint.

Frequently asked questions about face recognition turnstiles

It is an ordinary turnstile with a terminal or a camera that capture the face, check that a live person is in front of them and pick a candidate in the access list. The passage is opened by a guard who sees the frame and the photo from the list, or by the UBS.

No. The terminal is installed on the pedestal or next to it, the decision is passed to your access control system, and it opens the flap in the same way as after a card. How exactly is determined at connection together with your integrator.

The live presence check rejects photos on a screen, printouts, masks and videos before the list search. If there are two faces in the frame, the guard sees it on the screen.

It depends on the camera, lighting, passage mode and your access control system. The exact figure for your entrance comes from a test at a real checkpoint during rush hours.

This is how the law directly permits recognition by biometrics outside the UBS: 572‑FZ does not apply to a match with the involvement of an authorised official. The second route is passage through the UBS.

The terminal captures the face and checks Liveness, and the person’s biometrics are matched in the UBS by an accredited organisation. The person’s consent is required; after the check biometrics is stored for no more than 10 days for handling complaints.

The guest’s document is recognised at the checkpoint, the face is matched once against the photo in the document, the guard confirms access. The guest’s face template is not saved for the next visit.

They keep a card, a pass without a photo or passage by document through the post — with the same zones. They cannot be refused service because of the refusal (part 3 of article 11 of 152‑FZ).

Cards keep working through your access control system. Where the connection is unreliable, recognition is installed on your server inside the site’s environment.

A test on one turnstile is free. The cloud and installation in your environment are calculated by the number of entrances and people. Turnstiles and installation are separate, with you or the integrator.
