Palm payment: biometric payment by the pattern of the palm

Palm payment is a way to pay without a card, phone or pass: the person holds a hand over a scanner without touching it. NeuroVision recognises the palm by the vein or line pattern, checks that the hand is alive and shows the cashier a photo of the account holder. The cashier confirms the match — so palm payment is legal in Russia today.

The palm is not part of the Unified Biometric System, so in Russia a match is confirmed by an employee, not by an automatic process.

How palm payment works: a hand instead of a card, phone and pass

A checkout where you do not need to take anything out

Palm payment works like card payment, except the card is the hand. A person registers the palm once and links it to an account — a canteen’s internal account, a pass or a card. After that it is enough to hold the hand over the scanner at the checkout.

  • 01

The palm is the key to the account

The scanner turns the palm pattern into a digital template — a set of numbers from which the image of the hand cannot be restored. The template is linked to the person’s account. The palm image itself is not stored and does not reach the checkout.

  • 02

The cashier sees who is paying

The module finds the owner of the template and shows the cashier their photo and name. The cashier compares the person in front of them with the photo and presses “Confirm”. If the scanner made a mistake or someone else held up the hand — the payment does not go through.

  • 1 gesture instead of a card and a phone
  • 0 images a template is stored, not a photo of the hand
  • 1 cashier confirms the match

Veins or lines: two ways to recognise a palm

Biometric palm payment comes in two kinds, and the equipment depends on the choice. The NeuroVision module works with both.

  • Vein pattern

An infrared scanner lights the palm: blood in the vessels absorbs light more strongly than the surrounding tissue, and the network of veins shows through. It cannot be seen by the eye or in a photo, so it is hard to forge.

    In short:

    An IR scanner is needed

  • Line pattern

An ordinary camera captures the surface of the palm: lines, folds, the shape of the fingers. The camera of a terminal, tablet or kiosk is enough, no separate scanner is needed.

    In short:

    A terminal camera is enough

  • Live hand check

Before looking for a match, the module checks that there is a live hand in front of it, not a photo, printout, dummy or video on a screen.

    In short:

    In both ways

  • A template instead of an image

A template is built from the palm frame, and the image is deleted. Templates are stored in the NeuroVision cloud on servers in Russia or on your own servers.

    In short:

    Cloud or your own perimeter

How people pay by palm: register once, the cashier confirms at the checkout

An example — a factory’s corporate canteen. The employee does the first two steps once, the last two at every lunch.

Step 1

Confirms identity

The employee photographs the passport and takes a selfie. NeuroVision checks the document, Liveness and compares the selfie with the passport photo once. This way the palm is linked to the right person, not to whoever came up to the scanner first.

The employee confirms identity
Step 2

Registers the palm and gives consent

Signs written consent to biometric processing and holds the palm over the scanner twice. The template is linked to the account in the pass. Consent can be withdrawn — the template is then deleted.

The employee registers the palm
Step 3

Holds the hand over the scanner

At the checkout the employee holds the palm over the scanner without touching it. The module checks for a live hand and finds the template.

The employee holds the palm over the scanner
Step 4

The cashier confirms

The cashier’s screen shows the photo and name of the template owner. The cashier compares the person with the photo and presses “Confirm”, and the amount is debited from the account. If the person does not look alike — “Decline” and payment by card.

Where a palm is more convenient than a face or a card

  • The face is covered

Helmets, respirators and safety glasses at a plant or construction site, medical masks in a clinic. Nobody will take them off to pay for lunch.

  • A person does not want to show their face

A camera pointed at the face makes many people uneasy. A palm scanner looks only at the hand, and the face does not get into the frame.

  • Nothing to take out

Beach, pool, water park, gym: no card or phone on you, and wristbands get lost. The palm is always with you.

  • The pattern is hard to forge

The vein network cannot be seen by the eye or in a photo. To fool an IR scanner it is not enough to find a photo of a hand on social media.

The palm does not replace payment by face via the UBS, but covers places where a face and a card are inconvenient.
Payment by face at shop checkouts goes through the UBS — it is covered on the page “Biometric payments”. There are no checkout speed-up figures on this page. A platform for payment by face and palm — NeuroPay.

What the module checks before the cashier sees a match

The scanner stands at a checkout in a flow of people. Before showing the cashier the owner’s photo, the module filters out forgeries and poor frames.

  • A printout or a photo of a palm on a phone screen in front of the scanner Refusal
  • A dummy hand, a silicone overlay, a video instead of a hand Suspicious attempt

  • The hand is far away, fingers are clenched, the palm is turned edge-on Try again
  • A glove, a plaster, strong glare Try again

  • The match threshold is set for your point: stricter for large amounts Setting
  • Two similar templates — the cashier sees both photos and chooses; money is not debited automatically Setting

  • Every attempt and cashier decision is recorded: time, checkout, result
  • Repeated forgeries in a row are a signal to the security service Suspicious attempt
  • “Refusal” — the payment does not start
  • “Suspicious attempt” — the event goes to the security log
  • “Setting” — a rule for your point
  • “Try again” — a hint on the screen. How the liveness check works for the face — on the page Liveness

Where palm payment is accepted: closed territories and foreign markets

In Russia palm payment works where there is an employee at the checkout and people pay every day: lunches, passes, services on the premises. Where local law allows it — without a cashier too.

  • Corporate canteens

Lunch from the account in the pass: the employee holds the palm over the scanner, the cashier confirms. No queue with cards and no phone on the tray.

  • Manufacturing and construction

Where the face is covered by a helmet and a respirator: a canteen, a buffet, issuing workwear against the worker’s account.

  • Universities and campuses

Canteen, library, dormitory: the student pays from an internal account, the controller confirms.

  • Resorts, water parks, fitness

Pool, beach, spa — no card on you. The guest registers the palm at check-in and pays at the bar or the counter.

  • Clinics and sanatoriums

Staff in masks and caps, patients without a wallet: payment for meals and services on the premises.

  • Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and other markets

Banks there already accept palm payment in shops and transport. The module is installed in the partner’s perimeter in the country and works under its rules.

Can you pay by palm in Russia: the UBS, 572‑FZ and written consent

Short answer: you can, if an employee confirms the match and the person has given written consent. Below is a retelling of the rules as of 27 October 2026. It is a guide for a conversation with a lawyer, not a legal opinion.

  • The Unified Biometric System holds two kinds of biometrics: a face image and a voice recording (appendix to Government Resolution No. 772) 572‑FZ
  • So today you cannot pay by palm through the UBS the way you can by face. If the palm pattern is added to the UBS, the module will switch to matching through it 572‑FZNeuroVision

  • Organisations’ systems may not collect and store biometrics for identification, except collection for the UBS; for authentication, biometrics may be matched only against UBS vectors (Art. 15, Part 1, items 1–2 of 572‑FZ) 572‑FZ
  • That is why in Russia the scanner does not debit money by itself: it only offers the cashier a match Your company

  • 572‑FZ does not apply to matching that is carried out not automatically but with the participation of an authorised official (Art. 1, Part 2, item 2 of 572‑FZ) 572‑FZ
  • The cashier or controller sees the owner’s photo and the person in front of them and decides themselves whether to confirm the payment. Fix who may confirm by an order Your company

  • Providing biometrics cannot be mandatory, and refusal is no reason to deny service (Art. 11, Part 3 of 152‑FZ) 152‑FZ
  • Refusing biometrics cannot be grounds for refusing to sell goods or provide service (Art. 3, Parts 11 and 13 of 572‑FZ): a card, QR code or pass always remains at the checkout 572‑FZYour company

  • Palm templates are stored in the NeuroVision cloud on servers in Russia or on your own servers; palm images are not saved NeuroVision
  • Withdrew consent or left the company — the template is deleted, and the account works by card or pass Your companyNeuroVision

A palm scanner at the checkout: what to install and how to link it to payment

NeuroVision is the software part. Scanners, checkouts and the accounting system are yours or your contractor’s. We select equipment for the point. On biometric terminals for payment by face — see the page “Biometric POS terminals and ATMs”.

  • A scanner at the checkout

An IR vein scanner on the counter or a terminal camera for the line pattern. The palm is a few centimetres away, no touching.

    In short:

    For a checkout, buffet, counter

  • Checkout software with the SDK

The SDK is built into the checkout app on Android or Windows: prompts, palm capture, live hand check, template search.

    In short:

    For checkout makers and integrators

  • Cashier screen

The photo and name of the template owner, the amount, the “Confirm” and “Decline” buttons. The cashier’s decision is written to the log.

    In short:

    Mandatory in Russia

  • Link to the account

The confirmed payment goes to your accounting system: the account in the pass, a catering system, 1C or a partner bank.

    In short:

    Via API

Those who do not give their palm pay as before

  • Has not given consent

Pays by card, QR code or pass. No “give your palm to have lunch”.

  • Changed their mind

Withdraws consent from the employer or administrator — the template is deleted, the account stays.

  • The scanner did not recognise the hand

An injury, a bandage, a glove that cannot be taken off. Two failed attempts — and the checkout itself offers another method.

  • The cashier doubts

The photo does not match, the person is in a hood — the cashier presses “Decline” and payment goes the usual way.

The palm is an additional payment method. Refusing biometrics cannot be a reason to refuse service, so a checkout with a scanner also accepts ordinary payment.
An employee has the right to refuse biometrics, and this cannot affect meals, the pass or salary (Art. 11, Part 3 of 152‑FZ). On an employee’s consent in detail — on the page “Face access control”.

Frequently asked questions about palm payment

A payment method in which a person holds a palm over a scanner instead of a card or phone. The scanner reads the vein or line pattern and finds the account linked to that palm.

Banks are testing vein-pattern terminals; there is no mass launch yet. You cannot pay by palm through the UBS: it holds only the face and voice. On closed territories palm payment already works — with written consent and cashier confirmation.

Under 572‑FZ, organisations may not automatically recognise people by biometrics outside the UBS. The law does not apply to matching with the participation of an authorised employee, so the cashier confirms the match.

Veins are seen only by an IR scanner and are hard to forge. Lines are captured by an ordinary terminal camera, a separate scanner is not needed.

The module checks for a live hand and filters out photos, printouts, dummies and video on a screen. The vein network is not visible in a photo at all.

No. A template is stored — a set of numbers from which the hand cannot be restored — in the cloud on servers in Russia or on your servers.

No. Providing biometrics cannot be mandatory, and refusal is no reason to deny service (Art. 11, Part 3 of 152‑FZ).

Yes, under the same rules: the controller sees the photo and confirms entry. More details — on the page Face access control.

Yes. In Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan banks already offer palm payment. The module is installed in the partner’s perimeter and works under local rules.

Registration by passport and selfie — from 29 ₽, the palm module and deployment in your perimeter — on request. The first month is a free test.
